Acronis True Image Migration Software

Acronis True Image is a software product produced by Acronis that provides data protection for personal users including, backup, archive, access and recovery for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android operating systems.[4] As disk imaging software, True Image can restore the previously captured image to another disk, replicating the structure and contents to the new disk, also allowing disk cloning and partition resizing, even if the new disk is of a different capacity. The backups are in a proprietary format which saves using a .tib filename format.[5] Acronis was launched in 2003 and in December 2014 claimed to have over 5 million consumer and 500,000 businesses users.[6]

Overview[edit]

Jul 03, 2019  Finally, it’s a light Linux utility software, a good Acronis True Image alternative. Here you go, these Acronis clone software free alternatives can do a variety of clone tasks for you, but in different platforms. And these similar Acronis drive clone software can be used free, which makes it easier to take a shot and decide whether to use them. I purchased and downloaded Acronis TrueImage 2020 directly from the Acronis website. I've been using various image backup programs (including Truemage) over many years. This is a very polished program. Acronis True Image 2017 brings some unique capabilities to backup software, including Facebook and mobile backup. Its interface is the friendliest in the game, yet it still lets experts dig into. Acronis True Image 2019 review: Fast, comprehensive, and a wee bit overkill for the average user This is the power user's backup program, but it might be a bit much for average consumers. Acronis True Image, the most reliable, easy-to-use and secure personal backup software and the only backup that actively defends your files against ransomware. More than 5.5 million customers.

Editions[edit]

Several editions of Acronis True Image are available. Acronis True Image Cloud is a subscription-based software plus service offering that allows both local and online backup with unlimited cloud backup, and offers backup for a selection of mobile phones and tablets.[7] Successive versions of Acronis True Image are the local backup editions. Both editions are available at retail outlets.[8]

Until release 9 there were versions of Acronis True Image for personal and business users, with business versions named Acronis True Image Server.[9] Later server backup software was renamed 'Acronis Backup'.[10]

Operation[edit]

Acronis True Image can make two types of backups: file backup, backing up user-specified files and directories, and full system images, which are exact snapshots of an entire disk partition. The program can back up a system hard drive while the OS is running. Acronis True Image can browse the contents of backups and restore them partially or entirely. It can also mount a disk backup as a virtual disk, readable in the same way as any disk drive.

Although backups can be restored when the system is running, a major purpose of backup is to restore the system when it fails to start. Acronis True Image can install Acronis Startup Recovery Manager (ASRM), a computer program that helps restore backups at boot time. Acronis True Image can also create a copy of Acronis Rescue Media, a bootable DVD that contains a copy of Acronis True Image and can restore backups to a computer not bootable in the normal way, so long as a good boot drive (existing or new) is available.

The Acronis True Image Cloud version allows cloud users to also back up their mobile devices. iPhone and Android smartphones are supported, in addition to iPad and Windows tablets. This edition also brings back the 'Try and Decide' option which lets users perform potentially risky actions such as the installation of un-trusted software with the option of returning to the system function before the action if any problems occur.[11]

Acronis True Image Cloud allows multiple devices to be backed up, managed and archived on the Acronis Cloud from the online dashboard.[12]

Supported file systems[edit]

Acronis True Image supports multiple file systems including NTFS, FAT32, ext2, ext3, ext4, HFS+, APFS, ReiserFS, and Linux Swap.[13]

In addition to backing up supported file systems, Acronis True Image provides raw sector backup and restore options independent of file system, thereby supporting a file system that is corrupt, or not supported. This creates a complete image of all sectors on the partition, whether they contain data or not; the image will not be compressed, and will be the same size as the partition.[14]

History[edit]

Acronis began in 2001 as a division of SWsoft[6] and in 2003 became a separate company and continued to release the Acronis True Image software. The True Image name was applied to all platforms from Home to Corporate until 2010, when Acronis business backup software was renamed, with True Image being the home version.[15]

Acronis True Image guarantees backward compatibility for image files (with the .tib extension) created with a single previous version, that is, images created with an immediate previous version can be successfully restored (older versions may or may not work). Backups are created to be compatible between different editions of Acronis True Image within the same version (Home, Enterprise), e.g., between former Acronis True Image Echo Workstation and Acronis True Image Echo Enterprise Server, or between Linux and Windows versions.[19] Compatibility is not guaranteed between products that are not within the same version.[20] Guaranteed cross-version compatibility is documented.[15]

Format conversion[edit]

VMware Converter by virtualization company VMware supports converting .tib files created by former Acronis True Image Echo 9.1 and 9.5, and Acronis True Image Home 10 and 11 into a virtual machine.[21][22] However, after VMware Converter failed to recognize Acronis True Image 2013 .tibs, VMware said 'unfortunately VMware Converter doesn't support current Acronis True Image versions'.[23]

Acronis True Image has an option to convert backups between its proprietary .tib and Microsoft's VHD backup format,[24] more widely supported, and documented under the Microsoft Open Specification Promise.

Partnerships[edit]

Acronis has licensed custom versions of Acronis True Image to some hard disk manufacturers, including Western Digital's Acronis True Image WD Edition,[25]Intel Data Migration Software to migrate from an existing hard drive to an Intel SSD,[26] and Seagate DiscWizard.[27] Such editions are free to download and use, but only with that manufacturer's hard drives.

Hello Acronis support,

I want to install Acronis True Image WD Edition that I get with my new WD Green SSD 240GB.

But, while installing it says it is meant for workstation purpose.

Please help me to get the same software to work on my Test Windows Server 2012 machine.

I am a professional and need this software to work for me.

The OS is a test OS and the deployment is not a production server of any type. I use it to test and work.

It is an evaluation version of the OS downloaded from Microsoft's website.

The computer is actually a workstation with a AMD Sempron processor with a server OS.

Please help.

Acronis true image software

From the ATI 2019 (Full product version) user guide:

Acronis True Image 2019 has been tested on the following operating systems:

  • Windows 10 (all editions, including October 2018 Update) *
  • Windows 8.1 (all editions)
  • Windows 8 (all editions)
  • Windows 7 SP1 (all editions)
  • Windows XP SP3 (32-bit) **
  • Windows Home Server 2011

* Beta builds are not supported. For more information, refer to https://kb.acronis.com/content/60589

** Limited support. Some features may not work properly. For example, Online Dashboard and Archiving.

The above list does not mention Windows Server 2012 so you would need to contact WD about whether there is any way to get the OEM ATI software to install on that OS.

Acronis supports server OS with their business line products (SnapDeploy 5 or Acronis Backup 12.5). True Image products are designed for home users and computer OS. I have not seen any hard drive manufacturers provide custom versions of SnapDeploy or Acronis Backup with hardware. Personally, I would not rely on your current plan as a potential server backup scheme. It's the wrong product for the job.. it is likely an outdated, neutered and modified version of Acronis True Image 2016 that only works with the WD drive, but is not designed for your server OS.

Also, FYI.. WD green hard drives are not supported by WD for server or NAS devices. They are specifically rated for computers (as shown on the box and the drive sticker). It's also my understanding that WD green has been phased out and rolled into WD blue (also rated only for PC's too) back in about 2015.. so you likely have purchased a new SSD but from old stock. Just something to be aware of if your server has any significant role to play in your environment.

Looks like the WD SSD is still fairly current - but probably still not recommended for servers or server OS.

I know it's inexpensive, but still worth the risk?

WD has retained Green class for SATA and M.2 drives. My recollection is that WD do not recommend either Green, Blue or Black drives for servers (at least when being used in RAID configuration), that’s possibly is only correct for HDD and not SSD.

For a server I would go for either an enterprise rated drive or one designed for a NAS.
