he Stationair is a 'forgotten Cessna' as far as flight simulation is concerned, eclipsed by the more glamorous Caravan, but for pilots who need a rugged aircraft that can haul half a ton out of a rough strip with full tanks, the 206 is a popular choice. Yep, the Stationair may lack the class of the Caravan and it can only haul a quarter of the payload, but it only costs a third of the price, which makes it a popular choice for pilots who run their own operations and want an unbreakable aircraft that has passed the test of time. The 206 has been through fire and back, given that the design originated in 1963 and that it survived the seventies crash when other, less popular models were ruthlessly deleted from Cessna's line up. It speaks volumes for the saleability of the airplane when you realise that the only other piston engined singles that Cessna saw fit to keep were the 172 and the 182, both of which are big sellers - but those are recreational aircraft. You often hear the Stationair referred to as an aerial SUV and it is by no means a bad analogy; beautiful it is not, but it works.

The origins of the Stationair lie in the 205, which in its turn was an evolution of the 210, the major change being the 205's fixed gear. Planes sold better in the sixties and nearly 600 hulls were sold in the first two years, all of them to folk who valued haulage ability over speed. It seems strange that planes can sell better with fixed gear than without, but retractibles cost much more to purchase and maintain, and sooner or later, someone will forget and land them with the gear up. Encouraged by these strong sales, Cessna stuck in a bigger (285 hp Continental) engine, reworked the wing and enlarged the flaps, renaming the plane the U206, which had such a strong bias towards utility work that even the seats were an optional extra. The big double doors on the aft right hand side of the hull proved to be a big attraction and in '67, Cessna put in an even bigger engine, this time a 300 hp Continental and at the same time offered a turbo option - this was the moment that the plane acquired the name 'Stationair'. Various minor modifactions followed, including cuffed leading edges to the wings, which improved low speed handling, a seven inch stretch to increase luggage space and aerodynamic revisions including more streamlined wheel pants. All of this enhanced the 206's comfortable sales record, which was helped greatly by a wide CG range and a reputation for carrying anything that could be got in through the cargo door - which was 99% true, the other 1% leading to increased wisdom in those who got to walk away.

A new Stationair will cruise at 145 knots, although most pilots throttle them back to 135, a which point the fuel consumption falls to under 13 gallons per hour, a significant saving. The plane has no vices, rides gusts well and makes a good IFR platform, but it tends to be heavy in pitch, which has led to stories about the plane being difficult to stall (in practice it is, unless you have biceps like a gorilla, because it can be tough holding the nose up long enough and high enough). The flip side is that large numbers of 206 arrivals have been made nosewheel first, so a fair proportion of the fleet has been involved in hard landings, a situation that isn't helped by the plane's excellent short field capabilities, which have tempted pilots into places they could fly into, but couldn't get out of again. Early models could drop those barn door flaps to 40 degrees, but go-arounds were tricky with all that metal hanging out and for safety reasons later hulls can only make 30 degrees of flap. Over the years just about every kind of modification has been tried, including manufacturer approved cargo pods, floats, skis, STOL mods and long-range tanks.

There are a number of Carenado 206 products available in the Pilot Shop, the cheapest being the 'base pack', which contains four different variations on the wheeled model; the extension pack (you need the base pack to install this), which includes an amphibian and a cargo model; and the 'full pack' which gets you the lot. At the time of writing, there was no saving involved in buying the full pack, so if you are on a budget, you could buy the base pack first and add the extension pack later. I reviewed the full pack, the review being done on a 3 Ghz Pentium running XP and a 128 Mb video card. I could not find any minimum specs, although I would suggest a 1.7 Ghz processor is the minimum required for stutter-free operation.

Installation was easy, the only complication being the need to enter the Pilot Shop registration code. Checking the start menu revealed links to a clutch of nicely produced PDFs describing the workings of the sim panel, as well as checklists and performance limitations. The translation from the original Spanish is kind of interesting, but more than adequate for instructional purposes.

The blurb for the full pack mentions twelve variations of the 206, but when you dissect that out, the bottom line is an amphibian; a cargo version with an under fuselage pod; and a wheeled version with or without wheel pants. You can also choose to have one or two pilots in the cockpit and the combination of all these possibilities and the liveries that go with them gets us to the magic dozen.

The visual model is excellent - it is a long while since I have seen a payware plane that could be described as below average in spot view, but Carenado have done an exceptional job on this addon and the planes have a crispness of line that makes them stand out from the crowd. The perspectives chosen by Microsoft for FS deny developers much chance to convey the sheer size of planes like the Caravan and the 206, but nonetheless, this mother looks like you wouldn't want it to run over your foot. All the animations you would expect are provided, plus opening cockpit and cargo doors (where fitted) and animated pilots. The cargo model would have lent itself to one of those 'dioramas' developers occasionally provide, where a hot key produces a pile of luggage waiting to be loaded, but I guess Carenado had to draw the line somewhere.

A quick flick through the file library shows we have a couple of repaints for the amphibian, N2775B.ZIP and BMC206.ZIP by Glenn Baker and Brian Smith respectively. Fortunately both of these are very good, because a more assiduous search revealed that was all there was - which is strange, because this is such a good addon you would think all the usual talent would have tried their hand at repainting it. Any one who does venture into this area will definitely be popular (-:

The 2D panel is photoreal; a very clean graphic that stands the test even at high resolutions. The edit is exceptionally clean, with virtually no stepping and no orphan pixels and the legends just begin to blur at at 1600 x 1200, although they are still very readable. The gauges are up to the same kind of standard and are consistent across the panel - some developers mix different 'generations' of gauges in their panels to save development time, but Carenado have fortunately resisted the urge. If I had my back to the wall, the panel isn't in the Flight1/DreamFleet/Captain Sim class, but I would have to rack my brains to think of other developers who can regularly turn out this level of quality. The only thing I can carp at is that VC stills are used for all the subsidiary views in the cockpit (left, right, etc.) with the inevitable quality clash.

The sub-panels can be popped up using a group of simicons at upper left, it being possible to dismiss the entire group if it gets in the way. As you can see, one possibility is a 2D approach view, which is a viable alternative to using the VC for approach if you are still wedded to the 2D panel. The other sub-panels include a nice radio stack, consisting of a bunch of boxes that have served their time and been punished accordingly, the fuel and trim, the engine gauges, and a simulation of the 300A Navomatic (where do they find the imagination to think of these names?) autopilot. Many of the instruments can be zoomed to about double the original size by clicking on their faces and some also have a second click spot for digital readouts. Variations to the standard fit include a digital fuel gauge and DME; you might wonder why have a second fuel gauge, but Cessna gauges are notoriously inaccurate and are only totally reliable when the tanks are either completely full or completely empty. When you are flying across hundreds of miles of the boonies, precision is comforting.

As we have come to expect these days, the VC duplicates all the functions of the 2D panel and it can be used to fly the plane without any problems - I used this mode for most of the review and have to say it is one of the better VCs I have come across. If you like fly in this mode, the one problem is spotting the flap lever, which tends to get hidden behind the right hand yoke, but this must be a trick of FS perspective, because it isn't a problem in a real 206.

Cessna 172

The flight model is good. There is a limit to what can be done to capture the feel of a real plane in a computer simulation, especially one like the Stationair, where the control forces are such a key feature. A 172 feels more sedate than a 152, a 182 more than a 172 and so on, but the difference is qualitative and even the most sophisticated game yokes can't do the step between one and another justice. However, Carenado have managed to produce a sim that feels as if it is flying off the runway, is stable in all regimes of flight and can be used to make traditional dive-off-a-cliff full-flap Cessna style approach, which is more than many of their rivals are capable of doing. There is a very slight tendency to skid in turns and it is easier to hold the nose up into a stall than it should be, but then the sim can't make you fight several tons of airplane that is planning to head the other way, so we'll have to let that one go. As usual, spins are peculiar, but that is nothing new, because Microsoft didn't intend simmers to do spins, because they are bad for us. Altogether now, 'Can we have proper flight modelling outside the normal flight envelope in FSX, Microsoft, pretty please, with sugar on top, etc.?'

The sound set is a little shrill, but in the ballpark. Internal sound proofing seems to have been low on Cessna's list of priorities when they did the Stationair and to sit in one is to envy the pilot his noise reducing headset. Everything tends to rattle as well, but fortunately for us all, Flight Simulator doesn't simulate rattles. Yet.

Verdict. Nice one. I am astonished there are so few repaints around, because this sim deserves to be very popular with the bush simmers. I flew it in and out of Chelan Muni and around Orcas Island and Emma Field and really enjoyed myelf. Carenado have had their ups and downs, but I like their 206 very much.
