I would suggest you to perform Windows store app troubleshooter and check if it helps.

Follow the below steps:

  1. Type troubleshooting in the Search area on the taskbar.

  2. Click on View all on the left panel of the Troubleshooting Windows.

  3. Select Recording Audio.

  4. Follow the on screen instruction.

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, the troubleshooter wants me to plug in a microphone, but that is not what I am trying to do. I want to record streaming audio through the computer's sound card.

I too have this problem, or something similar. I want to record streamed audio. Researching the problem, it seems there needs to be a recording device called 'stereo mix' enabled. Numerous posts say to right click in the Recording tab of the System Sounds, then check Show Disabled Devices. If that doesn't help, the usual advice is to install the latest drivers (in my case from Realtek). None of that helps, and I still can't find 'stereo mix'. The only recording device that appears is 'Microphone Array' . All help will be appreciated.

As the issue still persists, there might be an issue related to the hardware of the Microphone. I suggest you to try running hardware and device troubleshooter and check if it helps.

Follow the below steps:

a) Type “Troubleshooting” without quotes in the Search box and hit enter.
b) Select “Hardware and Sound” from the Troubleshooter Window.
c) Select “Hardware and Devices” under Devices option.
d) Follow the On Screen instructions.

Thank you for the reply, but the suggestion didn't help. The troubleshooter said 'Restart your PC to finish installing drivers and updates' After restarting, a wizard appeared to uninstall the Realtek driver (or software, I can't remember). That took quite a long time, but the process seemed to work. Then it wanted the PC restarted, which I did. After restarting, nothing seemed different. I ran the troubleshooter again, and got the same result -- 'Restart your PC ..' So I'll try it again but I don't expect success. By the way, before trying any of this, I installed the latest Realtek driver from the Realtek site.
